Wherever it is mentioned in the Qur’ᾱn, it is used in the sense that there is no wali of the people other than God, as it is said: “And besides God you have neither a wali (guardian) nor a helper.”(2:107) Also: “and hold fast to Allah. He is your mawlᾱ: the best mawlᾱ and the best helper.” (22:78).The word wali and Mawlᾱ are derived from the same infinitive and have the same meanings.
