Wherever night is mentioned in the Qur'an, it is the symbol (mithaf) of the world of command and its symbolized (mamthul) is the world of command. Similarly, wherever the day is mentioned, it is the symbol of the world of creation and the world of creation is its symbolised. Thus the meaning of making the night enter into the day and the day into the night (3:27), is that God always brings the subtle world (alam-i latif) here, by giving it a corporeal form and takes the dense world (alam-i kathij) there, by making it subtle. Thus, according to this law, both this world and the next continue to be created from each other. For instance, until a mu'min is born in this world, his individual or personal world does not come into existence, nor is his personal paradise prepared. But when he comes here and does good deeds, then by those good deeds is created his personal world on the one side and on the other, a special new paradise of deeds is prepared for him in the eternal Paradise.

Q350 In verse (3:27) the last part of a magnificent prayer is mentioned, which is as follows: “Wa-tarzuqu man tasha’u bi-ghayri hisab”. What is the wisdom hidden in it?

  • The usual translation is: “And You give sustenance to whom You like, without reckoning.” Such a translation leads to the conclusion that those nations that have abundant wealth today are praised here! However, this is not correct. The correct ta’wili translation is: “And You grant knowledge to whom You will, even without (undergoing the experience of) resurrection.”
  • In reality, resurrection is a pre-requisite to attaining the treasure of knowledge and wisdom.
