A similar Hadith is reported from Imam Ja'far as- Sadiq: "The speech of God has four (aspects): expression ('ibarah), allusion (isharah), subtleties(lata'if) and realities (haqa'iq). Expression is for the common people, allusion for the chosen ones, subtleties for the Awliya* (friends of God) and realities for the Prophets." These two Ahadith show that there are many levels in the understanding of the Qur'an, as the Qur'an itself says about the ranks in knowledge in verse (12:76): "We raise to degrees (of knowledge) whom We will; and over every possessor of knowledge, is a possessor of knowledge."

Manifestations of Wisdom 2

It is true that the Wise Qur'an abounds in the meaningful subjects of shariat, tariqat, haqiqat and marifat, each of which is extremely necessary in its own place. Every sufi of high ambition initially follows the shariat strictly and simultaneously struggles to progress in knowledge, because there are many levels in knowledge, as mentioned in verse (12:76): "We raise the ranks of he whom We please; and over every possessor of knowledge is another possessor of knowledge." This means that all ulama' are not equal in Qur'anic knowledge and wisdom, rather they are in different ranks.
