The fundamental and paramount importance of symbol (ramz) and sign (isharah) in the Qur'an and the religion of nature (Islam) is from the fact that “wahy”, which is the most sublime and supreme heavenly reality on which the foundation of true religion is laid, means "sign (isharah)", as it has been said in the Mighty Qur'an: "Fa-awha ilayhim (Then he (Zakariyya) made a sign to them)" (19:11).
Intellect and Sign (Wahy, Ishrah): The manifestation of Intellect in the higher world is based on signs and the Qur’an in its Luminosity also is a sign because it is wahy, i.e. the secret sign. For this meaning of the word “wahy”, see verse (19:11): “Fa-awha ilay-him (And signified to them)”. Now you can say with certainty that in the Wise Qur’an are innumerable wisdom-filled signs which are related to the possessors of Intellect (ulu’l-albab) and it is they who know the secrets and signs of the Qur’an.
