Every wise person knows that a wisdom-filled sign is the language of wisdom, or symbolic language. It is prominently mentioned in the Surah of Maryam, where it is said: "If you see any human being (and he asks you something), then (by sign) say: Verily I have vowed a fast (of silence) to the Beneficent, and I shall not speak to anyone today ... Then she (Maryam) made a sign to him (Hazrat Isa)." (19:26-29).

There is no doubt that formally no lady has become a prophet. However, if someone asks this logical question that the prophet or the messenger means someone who brings a message from Allah, as God told Hazrat Maryam to tell people by indication: “I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal,” (19:26), and she conveyed this message. What would be a suitable and appropriate answer to a question about why a woman cannot be a prophet or Imam?

Q406 Hazrat Maryam(c)’s fasting is mentioned in verse (19:26). What wisdom does this fasting contain and what is its individual and collective benefit?

A406

  • The description is: “Then if you see any human being, say: Verily I have vowed a fast to the Rahman (the Beneficent), and I shall not speak to anyone today”.
  • This fasting means taqiyyah, that is, not to describe the specific and sublime secrets of religion, in which lie the benefit of individual and collective peace and security.
