Jahadu (They did jihad)

In verse (29:69) glad tidings is given to those who do jihad against their carnal soul in order to please God. The verse is: "And We shall certainly guide those who do jihad in Us (Our cause) to Our paths. Verily Allah is with those who do good." In this Divine teaching there is an allusion to the paths of sharicat, tariqat, haqiqat and macrifat, the guidance of which is conditional on doing major jihad.

Thousand Wisdoms 250 (136)

In order to receive luminous guidance, one specific condition is mujahadah (spiritual excercise, self-mortification) as indicated in verse (29:69): “And those who strive hard (jihad) for us, We will indeed guide them in Our ways; and God indeed is with those who do good deeds”. This spiritual and luminous guidance of God is possible through the Revealed Light (5:15), namely the holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad, and the paths of the Divine secrets are in malakut (the world of angels), jabarut (the world of Divine attributes) and lahut (the world of Divinity). Further, the meaning of luminous guidance reaches azal and abad, for it is beyond and above the limits of time and space.

Q455 Please tell us an esoteric wisdom of verse (29:69): “And those who struggle in Our [path], We surely guide them to Our paths.”

A455

  • Although from the very beginning the struggle of a mu’min progresses step by step in the light of guidance, the special luminous guidance starts after the intellectual transformation.
  • This Divine guidance is the subject of the major jihad, because [constant] struggle and endeavour is indeed against the carnal soul.
Casket of Pearls Vol 1 (219)

It is not possible to travel along this holy path, the sirat-i mustaqim, i.e. to travel along the paths of shari'at, tariqat, haqiqat, and ma'rifat without jihad (holy war). There are three jihads:
a) to fight against infidels
b) to fight against satan
c) to fight against nafs-i ammarah (carnal soul).

As God says: "As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths" (24:69). That is to say that God will show them exoterically and esoterically the paths of Islam - shari'at, tariqat, haqiqat, and ma'rifat - so that they will attain eternal salvation and peace.
