35:1

Flight of Mu'min

Q. 64. "I saw Ja'far (bin Abi Talib) in the Paradise flying with angels" (Prophetic Tradition). Is this higher honour confined only to Hazrat Ja'far or is it common to all mu'mins? Do angels fly like birds or in any other state?

A. The honour of flying with angels in the Paradise, is not confined only to Hazrat Ja'far-i Tayyar. But, it is certain that in this honour, he is an example and a model for all mu'mins and this honour is for everyone to attain.

The flight of angels is entirely different from that of birds. This is spiritual flight, which is possible only on the wings of the remembrance of God. As it is said in the Qur'an: "The maker of angels as (His) messengers having wings two, three and four" (35:1). This means that the dhikr of two, three or four names continues in the angels simultaneously.

What is Soul 44

Ajnihah (Wing, arm)

See verse (35:1): "Praise belongs to Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels with wings, two, three and four." Here it is important to note that the wings of angels are not like those of birds. Rather, they fly by (the power of) Divine remembrance (dhikr-i ilahi). Therefore, the two names of dhikr are called two wings, three names, three wings and four names, four wings. However, it should be remembered that the dhikr of angels is automatic. That is, the dhikr of the supreme Name (ism-i a'zam) continues automatically in their hearts and souls.

Q204 Please explain verse (35:1): “Praise belongs to Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Maker of angels as messengers with wings, two, three and four.”

A204 It can be concluded from the afore-mentioned ahadith and this verse that by abundant dhikr and cibadat and progress in knowledge and wisdom, male and female mu’mins can become angels. It also became known that the wings of angels are of dhikr-i ilahi (Divine remembrance). Their dhikr is so pure, sublime and miraculous that it continues automatically. However, first try to be enriched with the wealth of the knowledge of certainty.

Study the blessed verses (51:47-49): “And We built the heaven with might, and We extend it wide. And We spread the earth forth; what excellent spreaders [are We]! And all things We created in pairs, that haply you may reflect.”

Ta’wili purport: And We created the macrocosm by Our might and power and We continue to extend it perpetually. Verse (35:1) says: “He adds what He wills in the creation. Verily Allah has power over all things.”
