The world of dreams of the noble Prophets and the great awliya' is, in fact, different from that of the common people. For theirs is the dream of the friends of God, which is linked with spirituality. With respect to consciousness, it is like wakefulness, but the feeling and understanding in it is directed towards the spiritual world. It was because of this that Hazrat Ibrahim immediately started to act upon that command of his dream, in which he was asked to sacrifice his dear son (37:102).

Ru'ya 1 (Vision, dream)

It is said in a Hadith: "The dream of Prophets is revelation", as mentioned in verse (37:102): "Verily, I saw in a dream that I was slaughtering you." (The dream of Hazrat Ibrahim) and that of a true mu'min is one of the 46 parts of Prophethood. (Bukhari, Cairo, I, 46, Delhi, I, 454)

Ru'ya 3 (Vision, dream)

Common people are not able to understand that the dreams of the Prophets and the Imams are linked with the spiritual world, as was the dream of Hazrat Ibrahim, in which he, by the command of God, sacrificed his beloved son Hazrat Ismacil (37:102). Indeed, in such a luminous dream full of spirituality, the holy Prophet had observed extremely great secrets of micraj (spiritual ascent) (17:60). God tested the people by it. Since God intended to try people, the key explanation of micraj is not given and it is left to knowledge and recognition. And this Divine law (sunnat) has continued to try people again and again.

Although spiritual sacrifice and martyrdom starts from the stage of Hazrat Israfil and Hazrat Izrail, it does not complete until it reaches the rank of "sacy" (37:102). Sacy means to run, which is the name of the running of the light, the place of which is the "forehead". Regarding the running of the light, examine verses (57:12, 19; 66:8). In short, after the physical and spiritual sacrifice and martyrdom of Hazrat Ismail, his intellectual sacrifice also took place in the Sacred Sanctuary. It is an extremely wonderful discovery of spiritual science that each of these three sacrifices are in thousands, so that the creatures of God may benefit from them in Paradise.

Practical Sufism and Spiritual Science (119)

Study carefully verse (37:102), in which it is related that Hazrat Ibrahim slaughtered his beloved son Hazrat Isma`il in a dream. Thus, in order to act upon that in a wakeful condition, as soon as he flung him face down, God accepted his sacrifice and ransomed Hazrat Isma`il with a great sacrifice (zibhin `azim, 37:107 - i.e. the miracle of `Izra’il). Zibhin `azim means a great sacrificial animal, by which is meant the soul of Imamat. For the grandeur and eminence of this soul is such that, when it is sacrificed at the stage of `Izra’il, many souls attain salvation through it.
