51:50

Firru (Run)

God says in verse (51:50): "So, you run unto Allah!" The wisdom-filled allusion of "running" is that every work of religion should be accomplished with full vigour and promptness. For instance, if the open or hidden dhikr (remembrance) is not satisfactory, what then can be the reason for it other than laziness? So, its remedy is that you should run unto Allah, i.e. you should do rapid dhikr.

Thousand Wisdoms 655 (348)

It is commanded in verse (51:50): “Therefore, fly to God”. That is, you should accomplish every religious work with great rapidity, for due to laziness and delay in religious works, not only is life wasted, but there is also the danger that the mean and wicked carnal soul or devil will ensnare (us) in a trap of deception. Therefore, it is commanded that the believing servant should fly to the proximity of God. To fly to the proximity of God is possible only through such a word and deed which is free from any trace of laziness and negligence. In order to create this kind of attribute in oneself, rapid dhikr is extremely necessary, which in reality is flying to God.

Book of Healing (261)

The command of God, mentioned in verse (51:50) is extremely full of wisdom: "So run unto Allah." That is, you should attain Divine proximity with the rapid speed of complete obedience, ibadat and knowledge as soon as possible and remain in His protection from all calamities and afflictions. There are other subtle wisdoms hidden in the example of running: It alludes to the mujahid-like deeds such as rapid dhikr, which is a jihad against Satan and the carnal soul. God willing, a mu'min with high ambition crushes the Satanic insinuations with this power.

Q275 Among the adhkar (sing. dhikr), you have praised the rapid dhikr. Where is it mentioned in the Qur’an? What is its Qur’anic evidence?

A275

  • It is mentioned in verse (51:50): “Therefore flee unto Allah”. This is the evidence of the rapid dhikr and excelling in good deeds.
  • The same command is in “sabiqu” (Race one another, 57:21) and in “saricu!” (And vie with one another!, 3:133). Rapid dhikr is also implied in the meanings of the running of light (57:12; 66:8). The wisdom of rapid dhikr is also mentioned in the Surah of cAdiyat in verses (100:1-2).
