55:19
Indeed, the Universal Intellect and the Universal Soul are the two oceans which are both joined together as well as being separate from one another. They are the Pen and the Tablet too, by whose writings come into being pearls and corals, as mentioned in verses (55: 19-23). It is known to everyone that during writing, a physical pen touches the tablet or paper and lifts off it repeatedly. This act or barzakh (line of demarcation) of union and separation is necessary, not only between the physical pen and paper, but also between the oceans of the Divine Pen and the Guarded Tablet, and it is because of this system that pearls and corals come out of them. Otherwise, neither by total separation, nor by total union can writing come into existence. And in this system are hidden great and far- reaching allusions.
Confluence of two Oceans (majmcfu'l-bahrayn): By this is meant the meeting point of the Universal Intellect and the Universal Soul, in which they work together. These are the two oceans from which, according to the verse (55:19-22), come the pearls and the coral. The story of Hazrat Musa, which is in the Surah of Kahf (Cave) (58:60-82), relates to this confluence.
Suratu'r-Rahman is called the Bride of the Qur’an because of the fact that all spiritual bounties are tersely mentioned in it, and it is the quintessence of the beauty of knowledge and gnosis, as the Qur’an says: “He has made the two oceans (of wakefulness and sleep) to flow (so that) they meet together: Between them there is a barrier which they cannot pass. Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny? There come forth from them pearls and corals”. (55:19-22). This barrier is the confluence of the two oceans and the place of spirituality, where the pearls and corals of `aynu'l-yaqin (certainty of vision) are obtained.
