56:10

Sabiqun (Those who excel):
In many Qur'anic verses, those fortunate mumins who excel in good deeds, i.e. they excel others on the straight path, are praised highly. Because this path is such that its stages can be traversed only by knowledge and good deeds. Thus today those who are sabiqun (foremost) on the straight path will also be sabiqun tomorrow on the Day of Resurrection and closest to God (56:10-11).

Rubies and Pearls 103

Q51 Each and every verse of the Qur’an has an exoteric and an esoteric aspect, and hence there is no place in it in which a door of wonders and marvels of knowledge and wisdom does not open to the people of insight. In the light of this, please explain some points about the amazing subtle life of the people of paradise, known as the sabiqun (those who excel others). What are the characteristics of the sabiqun? Do they excel in everything? Or primarily in knowledge and action? Are they the closest ones [to God] according to the Qur’an? Is there a command to excel in everything?

A51 The characteristics of the sabiqun are described in verses (56:10-26, 88-89). They excel in everything, primarily in cilm (knowledge) and camal (action). According to the Qur’an, the sabiqun are the muqarrabun (those who are near God). Yes, in the Qur’un there is a command to excel in everything in verses (57:21; 2:148).

Casket of Pearls Vol 1

Thus this sign of the external world is like the Quraanic verse, which is: "And the foremost (in good deeds) are foremost (in ranks also), those are they who are nearest (to God)," (56:10-11). Thus alif is the example of the foremost ones, because this letter precedes other letters both in order and in its vast meanings as well.
