Fitrah (Religion of Islam)

The wisdom of this Hadith is that potentially every child of the nations of the world is born according to nature (Islam) and then through progress, gradually he can eventually actualise within himself all the beauties of Islam. But, it is necessary to observe what the influence of parents is upon him. If the parents were unable to influence their children at all, then the wise Qur’an would not have said: "O you who believe, save yourselves and your families from the fire (of hell)." (66:6)

Thousand Wisdoms 661 (351)

Q466 It is mentioned in verse (66:6): “O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from the fire whose fuel is men and stones.” How can one put into practice this Divine farman. How can a mu’min save his family from the fire of hell?

A466

  • First of all, it is necessary for a mu’min to know what things are within the domain of his obligations. If he knows his obligations and also fears God, then he will be trying to save himself and his family from the fire of ignorance through knowledge and action. For, the fire whose fuel is men and stones is the fire of ignorance.

Thus an example of the universality and comprehensiveness of piety is that Allah says:

“O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from the fire” (66:6).

It is evident that this command “Save! (qu!)” is directly linked to piety and it is also obvious that the only way to avoid hell is to obey God as mentioned in the Qur’an, however, this obedience of God is such that it becomes incumbent to act upon all the orders of God, the Prophet and the custodians of the Divine command (sahiban-i amr). This shows that piety (taqwa) is among the comprehensive words of the wise Qur’an and all the religious commands are included in its purport.
