2:71

related refs 4:92

In the Wise Qur'an, the radical word for salamati is salam, which is derived from the root s-l-m. Therefore, all such Qur'anic words which are derived from this root are related to the subject of salamati. Thus, concerning this subject, we find many meanings in the Qur'an, some of which, God willing, we will explain here. One such word is musa1lamah, which in the verse (2:71) is used in the sense of sound, unimpaired, unblemished, flawless; and in the verse (4:92) in the sense of resigned, surrendered, submitted, therefore, we come to know definitely that soundness and submission are both included in the meanings of salam and salamati.

A cow or an ox is an allegory for the gluttonous soul of man. Thus, every adult mu’min is initially like the ox in the story of the Children of Israel, which has been commanded to be slaughtered, by which is meant arduous discipline and annihilation. If there is success in this struggle, the salik becomes as tame as the ox that ploughs the land; and if there is still greater success, he becomes like an ox which brings out the water from the well and irrigates the fields (2:71). That is to say, with the water of esoteric knowledge, he irrigates and causes to prosper the gardens and the fields of the personal world.
