According to the teachings of the Qur'an, some people are blind of the eye of the heart (22:46). Reflect a little. Does not this mean that there are some people who can see with the eye of their heart? If so, then does this mean that they see the external and material world? Not at all. Rather this means that with the eye of their heart, they see the internal world, which is the world of spirituality and the same is the spirituality of the Qur'an.

Quran and Spirituality 28

Qalb (Heart): In the Glorious Qur’an the subject of heart invites great attention. According to a Hadith everything has a heart and the heart of Qur’an is the surah of Ya-Sin. By the human heart is meant intellect, because knowing (22:46) or not-knowing (7:179) is related to the heart. And here a very great hidden secret is that, in ta’wil the Imam of the time is the sound heart of the mu’min (26:89).

Pure Intellect 45

Tacma (It/he becomes blind)

O my dears! Verse (22:46) says: "Have they not travelled in the earth (of the personal world) that they could have hearts to understand (the truth), or ears to hear it? Verily, it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts."

Thousand Wisdoms 217 (117)

In verse (22:46) it is said: “Have they not travelled in the earth (of the personal world) so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.” In this sacred teaching there is the mention of the disease of the blindness of the heart, which can be cured by spiritual excercise, inner observation, intellect and wisdom.

Book of Healing (177)

Q42 Is recognition of the soul and recognition of the Lord attained with the external eye or with the inner eye? If you say that the recognition of all inner or spiritual things (or realities) is with the inner eye (or the eye of the heart), then does not the event of micraj from its beginning to its end takes place internally and hence is observed with the eye of the heart?

A42 In connection with recognition, it is necessary to understand verse (22:46): “Verily it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts”. It is evident from this verse that recognition is not in the physical, but rather in the spiritual state. Therefore, the recognition of all inner things (realities) is in the spiritual state. Since micraj is a spiritual reality, therefore, from the beginning to the end it is a spiritual experience and can be observed with the spiritual eye.

Casket of Pearls Vol 1

Q240 This question is related to verse (22:46): What is the earth by travelling in which the hearts of people can understand, or their ears become capable of hearing the realities and recognitions? Are the blind according to the Qur’an, those who are physically blind or blind with respect to the eye of the heart?

A240

  • It is the earth of the personal world, by travelling spiritually in which the hearts attain intellect, understanding, knowledge and wisdom and the ears become capable of clearly hearing the realities and recognitions.
  • The wise Qur’an condemns those hearts which are blind with respect to the eye of the heart, as said in verse (17:72): “And whoever is blind in this world, will also be blind in the hereafter, and far astray from the way (of recognition).”
Casket of Pearls Vol 1 (116)

Had the lack marifat not been the cause of loss in the hereafter, the Wise Qur'an would not have condemned those who are blind of hearts, i.e. inner eye, as said in verse (22:46): "Verily, it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts." It is evident form this that realities and recognitions are observed with the eye of the heart.

Practical Sufism and Spiritual Science (161)

Q533 It is mentioned in verse (22:46): “Have they not travelled in the land so that they may have hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear?” An important question arises here: In which earth does one travel so that the hearts become able to understand and the ears hear? What great benefits are attained by the illumination of the heart’s eye?

A534

  • It is by travelling in the earth of the personal world that the inner eye is created and the inner ear begins to hear.
  • The inner eye has countless benefits. Read the article ‘Miracles of Nawafil’ and know to what extent Allah bestows favours on His believing servants.
