The Qur'an and Man: In the beginning of the Surah of ar-Rahman, in the verses (55:1-2), the word Qur'an alludes to the Universal Intellect and the word man, to the Universal Soul. For, God, the Exalted, has taught the former the tanzil and the latter, the ta'wil.

Regarding the beginning and end of the language of every nation, it can be said as a proof, that both in the lower and the higher worlds, the Sustainer of the worlds nourishes the rational souls with knowledge in their own languages, as He Himself says about this: “The Beneficent taught the Qur'an. He created man. He taught him to speak” (55:1-4). The ta'wil of these verses is that, in the world of command the Beneficent taught the higher survival (baqa'-yi ulwi), namely the permanent soul (ruh-i mustaqarr) of man, “the science of names” (ilmu'l-asma') in his own language. Then He created the physical shadow of this survival in the world of creation. This was his lower survival or the transitory soul, to whom God taught knowledge through discourse in the usual way. We have already discussed the permanent survival and the transitory survival of man in this book. These kinds of realities discussed in this book can be beneficial and productive if they are studied carefully.

Part 49

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Some wisdoms of the surah of Rahman called the Bride of the Qur’an (55:1-13): The Compassionate taught the Qur’an (55:1- 2). Ta’wil: The Imam-i mubin, by the command of God, gave the carifs the esoteric, luminous and miraculous teaching of the Qur’an through the ism-i aczam and spiritual resurrection. Thus, their creation and perfection became complete. They started to explain the science of ta’wil.

Not only is the reckoning of the sun and the moon the same in the sacred Sanctuary, but both are the same light. There the star and the tree prostrate equally. And He raised the heaven of the personal world from its earth, and placed the balance of knowledge and wisdom in the heaven, so that you may be able to use it truly in the light of knowledge and macrifat. He created the earth of the personal world for all creatures, in which there are bounties of numerous kinds. Then which of the bounties of your Lord will both of you, O jinn and humankind [subtle and dense creatures] belie?

It is said that humankind, jinn and angels are the different ranks of one and the same creature. This surah mentions all the bounties in one place. Allah addresses both jinn and humankind, and they are also together in the worship and macrifat for the sake of which they are created, as is mentioned in verse (51:56), where God says: “And I did not create jinn and humankind except that they may worship Me (i.e. they may recognise Me).”

Q313 Please explain the wisdom of verses (55:1-4): “The compassionate God taught the Qur’an, created man, (and) taught him explanation (bayan).”

A313

  • The Compassionate God, by teaching the carif the spirit and spirituality and light and luminosity of the Qur’an created him spiritually and intellectually and taught him the science of ta’wil.
  • Every carif is taught the esoteric and spiritual teaching of the Qur’an in his own tongue and everything occurs in the event of resurrection.
