Q13 If the Prophet and the Imam are light, what does it mean to seek mercy for them in the salawat?

A13 This question has arisen from the popular meaning of the salawat, but its ta'wil is different from the popular meaning. In connection with its ta'wil you should see Wajh-i din, guftar 50; (Urdu translation), kalam 50; Falsafah-i du`a, pp. 61-69 and Panj Maqalah IV, pp. 27-29. If you ponder on the ta'wil of salawat in these sources you will come to know that according to ta'wil, "salawat on Muhammad (May Allah send blessings and peace through him and his progeny) and progeny of Muhammad (May Allah send blessings and peace through him and his progeny)" means to seek blessings for ourselves through Muhammad (May Allah send blessings and peace through him and his progeny) and the progeny of Muhammad (May Allah send blessings and peace through him and his progeny) and to follow them in the true sense.

Further, it should be known that the meaning and ta'wil of salawat has various aspects: See for details the following Qur'anic verses:

  1. The salawat of God, the angels and the mu'mins upon the holy Prophet (33:56);
  2. The salawat of God upon mu'mins (2:157; 33:43) the salawat of angels upon mu'mins (33:43) and the salawat of the Prophet upon mu'mins (9:99, 9:103). Thus various wisdoms of ta'wil are hidden in the salawat. However, your question has been answered in this explanation.
