The blessed and wisdom-filled word " as-sur" is mentioned in ten verses of the Wise Qur'an, which are: 6:73; 18:99; 20:102; 27:87; 36:51; 39:68; 50:20; 69:13; and 78:18 and its synonym "an-Naqur" is mentioned once in verse (74:8).

Reflect carefully on verse (6:73): "It is He Who created the heavens and the earth by the truth (haqq = Word "Be"). The day He says (to the world), ‘Be’, it becomes and His speech (Word 'Be') is the truth (haqq)". This means that a personal world is created for every obedient servant from the Word of command, i.e. "Be (kun)", in which the entire external world is encompassed. Thus, if we look from the physical point of view, then azal (sing. azal) and abad (sing. abad) of people are separate, but at the place of spirituality and at the rank of the command "Be (kun)", all things become one in the Hand of God, and there is only one azal, which comprises abad too.

Further, as God says “… a grain of corn which growth seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains.” This means that only in one crop one grain is multiplied into seven hundred, and as a consequence, it has such a capacity hat it could produce sufficient seed for the cultivation of the entire would, but this process would take considerable time. Similarly, in the ummal-kitab, i.e. the surah al-fatiha, all the meanings of the Qur’an are contained, but without any time. Moreover, it should be remembered that the words and meanings of the surah al-fatiha are so comprehensive and universal that they embrace all the realities and wisdoms of the Qur’an. And it is in the tradition and practice of God that He causes an entire world to be comprised in the smallest thing, and then He expands the smallest thing to the extent of the spacious world; just as He has been creating the entire cosmos from a single word of kun (Be). (VI:73).

Why has God, the Wise Creator and Benevolent Lord, granted this great honour to the sur of Israfil, namely, the angelic and sacred music, so that He proclaims His eternal and ever and ever-lasting kingdom through it, both now in spirituality and in future on the occasion of Resurrection (6:73). Why has the su of israfil such importance that an angle even greater than Jibril or Mikail has been appointed and waits for it to sound? What is the secret of the sur of Israfil and what powers of Resurrection are hidden in it? How will it instantly awaken all those people from the sleep of death which no religious force could awaken from the sleep of negligence in this life? What is the wisdom of commissioning one of the Archangels (who follow the Pen and the Table in Divine order) for music and to reveal one of the four heavenly scriptures in the form of sacred melodies?
The use of the word sur or naqur (which both mean trumpet) is merely an allusion. It serves as a veil for its real meaning. Everything has a veil, including God Himself, who chooses a veil for His sacred essence. Thus God, the Wise, has given the name sur or naqur to the “angelic melodies”. Between the name and the named, there is as much difference as between heaven and earth and it has to be so.

Kun (Be!)

It is said in verse (6:73): "And the day (when) He says (yaqulu): Be! and it becomes (yakunu)." That is, by the command of God, the personal world or microcosm comes into being from the external world or macrocosm in the personal resurrection of the Perfect Man. It should be noted that both the verbs yaqulu and yakunu are in aorist (muzari) tense (that is, they embrace the meanings of both the present and the future).

Q177 Please explain the wisdom of verses (6:73-74): “Wa huwa’lladhi khalaqa’s-samawati wa’l-arza bi’l-haqqi wa-yawma yaqulu kun fa-yakunu. Qawluhu’l-haqq.”

A177 First translation: And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth with truth. And the day [when] He says: Be! It is. His word is true. Second translation: And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth [of the personal world] by haqq (Word of Command), and when He says: “Be”, then it becomes a world. His qawl (Word of Command) is true.

  • Haqq means the Word of Command, which is haqqu’l-yaqin (the truth of certainty).

By uttering “Be” there, a universe comes into existence every time.

Reflect on verse (6:73). Here the purpose of Allah, may He be exalted and blessed, saying “kun (Be!)” is to make the subtle world out of the dense world so that paradise may be the junction of this world and the next world. In paradise there is all that its dwellers desire. In this connection there are numerous Qur’anic verses, which can provide information for you.

It is said in verses (6:73-74): “He it is Who created the heavens and the earth with the truth. And the day (when) He says: ‘Be!’ It is. His Word is the truth. His is the kingdom on the day when the sur will be blown. Knower of the invisible and the visible, and He is the All-wise, the All-aware.”

Ta’wili purport: The One/Unifier and Subduer has created the heavens and the earth, i.e. the external world forever. When a spiritual resurrection becomes complete, Hazrat qa’im says to it ‘Be!’ (kun), by which the external world with all that it contains, transforms into the personal world as mentioned in verse (14:48).

And where there is the spiritual miracle of enfolding the universe, it is an indication and a sign that the external world has been transformed into the personal world and now the latter is the cosmic paradise.
