The Ethical Philosophy of Nāṣir-i Khusraw

Excerpt:
The particular focus of this paper is Nāṣir’s ethical philosophy, which forms an integral part of his metaphysical system, in which he combines the wisdom of Islam and Greek philosophy. Nāṣir’s ethics emphasize the creative and decision-making functions of the human soul, and are a fertile locus to examine the interplay between soul and intellect, and soul and the world. The human soul is the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds, participating intimately in each. Thus, it contains within itself the possibility of either damnation or salvation. Damnation results from neglecting the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom, while salvation is attained through acquiring knowledge and wisdom, which lead back to the spiritual world, i.e., to the Universal Soul.
